Brazilians have roots that span all across the globe.
Today, there are almost 3 million Asian-Brazilians and São Paulo is home to one of the largest Japanese communities outside of Japan.
Walk along the boardwalk in Rio de Janeiro or the bustling city of São Paulo, and you'll notice that you will never see a face that looks remotely similar to anyone else's. You're looking at the true essence of Brazil, right in the face(s).
Hate crimes against Asians have increased by 1900% since the beginning of COVID-19, and this is based off only what has been reported.
Although the pandemic has been stressful for all, it is NEVER acceptable to harm or threaten others. We as people are only as good as the harmony we contribute to our communities.
Here are some practical things you can do to help.

Ask yourself (without self-judgment): "Did I grow up believing model-minority stereotypes? Do I still do this today?"
If so, don't beat yourself up - you can grow!

- Watch Asian Americans on PBS
- Read about the history of anti-Asian legislation in American history
- Learn about the diversity of Asian cultures and the unique socio-economic issues within each community.
ADVOCATE
- Sign this petition (by 18MR) to stop the spread of COVID-19 misinformation and anti-Asian violence.
DONATE
- Apex for Youth (@apexforyouth) delivers possibilities to underserved Asian and immigrant youth from low-income families in NYC.
- STOP AAPI HATE (@stopaapihate) is a national coalition addressing anti-Asian hate amid the COVID-19 pandemic

CREATE A SAFETY PLAN
Speak to your friends + family (create a buddy system, download safety apps on your mobile phone).
PROTECT YOUR SPACE
Report, block, and mute those who are harassing or bullying on the internet.
PRACTICE SELF CARE
- Incorporate self-loving practices throughout your day like meditation, counseling, and other mental health resources.
- Seek counseling or guidance from someone who also understands the Asian or Pacific Islander experience. Mental health is just as important as your physical health (check out this article)
And remember:
Love one another, protect one another, and speak up.
If you see anyone who may be in a vulnerable situation, speak up or look out for them
