As a brand led by three founders of Brazilian, Korean, and American descent, inclusivity is at the core of Sol de Janeiro. To us, Brazil is magic, and as one of the most diverse countries in the world, diversity is at the very essence of what is beautiful. 

In observance of Black History Month, the staff at Sol de Janeiro is dedicating adequate time toward self-education and moments of deep reflection to honor the accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor and throughout history.

Here’s a peek into how we are celebrating Black History Month in February — and beyond, inspired by the NAACP.

What We’re Watching:

Harriet (Hulu), Becoming (Netflix), John Lewis: Good Trouble (Amazon Prime Video), When They See Us (Netflix), One Night in Miami  (Amazon Prime Video), Emicida: AmarElo – It’s All for Yesterday  (Netflix), and TED Talks’ Black History Month Playlist.

What We’re Reading:

The Vanishing Half by Britt Bennett, The Warmth of Other Suns  by Isabel Wilkerson, and I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou.

What We’re Doing:

In addition to attending virtual events, we’re encouraging employees to make donations to various organizations including, but not limited to, the 100 Black Men of America, Inc., National Black Child Development Institute, NAACP Empowerment Programs, and National Association of Black Storytellers. Sol de Janeiro will be matching each employee donation.

We also appreciate organizations, like Pull Up for Change (started by Uoma Beauty  founder, Sharon Chuter) for holding us accountable as we continue to grow and foster a more diverse team —  along with an inclusive, open environment. 

In June 2020, we took a pledge and wanted to keep our extended SOL family updated with our progress.

Our full-time employee diversity profile* is as follows:

11.5% Black or African American
12.5% Hispanic or Latin
18.3% Asian
57.7% White

Currently, 12.5% of our management team and 11.1% of our executive leadership team are Black (compared to 6% in June 2020).

We recognize that we must do even more  to ensure that Sol de Janeiro continues to bring all the voices of our community to the table.
