The Sol de Janeiro experience has always been about bringing joy through transformative skincare and beauty products (and experiences) made with thought, care, and respect for our world (and our SOL Family!) Our collection of Body Joy-inducing products is PETA-certified, cruelty-free and focuses on ethically sourced and high-quality ingredients.
We NEVER use sulfates, phthalates, parabens, mineral oils or microplastics, but know that’s just a start towards becoming a more eco-aware beauty brand. In honor of Earth Day, we wanted to share a snapshot of our SOL Sustainable goals we’ve completed as of 2022…and a sneak peek into our future.
What We’ve Achieved
As a company we strive to ensure that beauty goes hand in hand with sustainability — it’s the SOL way to be thoughtful about the world we live in.
95% of our packaging will be reusable, recyclable (recoverable) or compostable by the end of 2025 — and this year, 100% of packaging will include recycling instructions to eliminate the guess work for our SOL fans.
80% of our paper-based packaging came from ethically and sustainably sourced fiber (verified by FSC - the forest stewardship council) or was made up of 35% or more post-consumer recycled content (PCR).
All cartons already use non-chlorine whitened paper and by 2023 we will expand on this by using only non-solvent-based inks.
Refills of Your Faves
We're excited to tell you about our new refill options — and more to come. It’s a great way to minimize our plastic consumption and a great way for you to stock up on the SOL products you love.
Starting this April, enjoy our Brazilian 4 Play Moisturizing Shower Cream-Gel 1 liter refill pouch for your existing 1 liter or 385 ml bottle. p.s. that means 74% less plastic packaging for a more eco-friendly shower.
And our cult classic Brazilian Crush Cheirosa 62 Perfume Mist is refillable too — which means you’ll never be short on scent. Even when you do your part by placing your mist pump in the recycling bin, they typically aren’t processed properly through your local facility. To help, hold onto your current pump for your next refill (versus ordering a new bottle) to minimize future pump production and waste.
Excited? Keep an eye out for more refills to come!
Respect for Amazonian Ingredients
At Sol de Janeiro, the diversity and richness of Brazil is always celebrated — and that celebration includes a commitment to protect the Amazon and our planet by always partnering with suppliers that share this commitment.
We are also incorporating renewable materials (like Bio Resins) in place of petroleum derived raw materials in place of traditional plastics to create new SOL packaging innovations. Think, our fully recyclable tubes for our Brazilian Touch hand cream tubes made from 33% sugarcane-derived material.
What’s Next for Us?
Sustainability is an ongoing dialogue at Sol de Janeiro, which means we have even more future-thinking SOL Sustainable goals including:
- Further finishing the weight of plastic in packaging
- Partnering closely with TerraCycle to recycle pre- and post-consumer waste
We appreciate your love and loyalty as we implement these important practices to become even better SOL citizens of the world.
