How Brazilians Celebrate Mother's Day! - Sol de Janeiro

Mother’s Day (or Dia das Mães) is a very big deal in Brazil. In fact, it’s considered by some to be the biggest holiday in Brazil after Christmas. That’s pretty huge.

In Brazil, showering love and attention on mom is taken seriously, but it’s not just moms getting all the love. In Brazil, Mother’s Day is often a multi-generational celebration – grandmothers and aunts are often part of the family gatherings with plenty of attention given to all the mom figures in our lives and these celebrations take place all over Brazil.

Lunch, barbecues and big family picnics are all favorite activities. This year some of these gatherings may pop up on FaceTime or Zoom – but the celebrations are more important than ever – as is the feeling of togetherness.  Great food is always a must for any Brazilian celebration – and dessert.  In Brazil, we love our dessert. One of the traditional favorites? Maracuja Mousse. (By the way, if you want a killer recipe, we've got you! Stay tuned on our Instagram to be updated on when this sweet treat drops!)

What else do we love on Mother’s Day? Flowers. It’s safe to say this is a pretty universal gesture but considering that Brazil is the single largest flower cultivating country in the world (fun fact!), the flowers are pretty spectacular. Some native flowers include, Camelia Rose, Begonia, Freesia, Hibiscus, and Brazil’s own national flower, Cattleya Orchid. Splashed with vivid colors and patterns, this gorgeous orchid reflects the beauty and energy of Brazil.

But if you opt to not give mom flowers, you can always take mom to the flowers. Nature-loving moms love a gift trip to Jardim Botânico do Rio de Janeiro (Botanical Garden in Rio) where there are over 6500 species of flowers, not to mention 150 species of birds. It’s definitely a special outing for mom.

Whatever you choose to do on Mother’s Day, we hope you share an amazing day with your mom and savor every minute.

Feliz Dia das Mães!
